The mysterious disappearance of Jim Wheatley (Charles Gray), while exploring a cave near a Mexican village, brings his sister, Gina (Mala Powers), and her husband, Dan Matthews (John Howard), to the territory to search for him. Embittered, crippled Pete Morgan (Paul Richards), insists on going along and reminds Dan that his condition is Dan's fault since it happened in an accident in which Pete saved Dan's life. Plus, Gina was Pete's sweetheart before the accident. Did we mention embittered? The party hears about an old Indian legend concerning the Cave of the Dead where human sacrifices were made to the Gods. Dr. Ramsey (Gerald Milton), married to a native girl, Concha (May Wynn), claims no knowledge of the cave, but he is here because the climate is ideal for rapid fungus growth for his work on cultivating fungus for antibiotics. You don't have to be from France to know that if the climate is good for fungus growth, a cave is even better but it takes Dan and Pete a while to get ...

Horror you can wash your hands with!

I remember seeing this as a kid on local TV and being somewhat put out by the fact that you never got a clear look at the infected natives (probably for good reasons) and that the killer fungus monster at the finale was obviously tons of soap suds mixed in with a little dry ice fog. Oddly enough it stuck with me and soon I was putting shampoo in my hair and screaming "The fungus, the fungus!" Still, the leads all do a good straight faced job and the script doesn't contain the amount of Ed Wood style howlers you'd expect it to.As far as I know this is also the last horror film to present calypso singer Sir Lancelot who had appeared in the Val Lewton Films I walked with a Zombie and Curse Of The Cat People. The song "You Got To Suffer To Be Born Again is a mix of genius and absurdity. Highly recommended to anyone who likes old B movies.

This Charming Man

Directed by top choreographer Michael Kidd, Merry Andrew makes for wonderful entertainment. By the late 50's,the golden era of movie musicals was practically over(Kidd himself starred in another great, late-period MGM musical-It's Always Fair Weather with Gene Kelly & Dan Dailey) Danny Kaye's film career was also in decline by 1958-amazingly 1956's The Court Jester was a costly financial failure, he never had another real hit and his film career was pretty much over by 1963. Merry Andrew isn't a typical Kaye vehicle (I wonder if it was even written with the star in mind?) There are no Sylvia Fine 'patter' songs and very little of the zany comedy at which the star excelled. Instead there are a handful of wonderful Johnny Mercer-Saul Chaplin songs, some great set-piece dance numbers courtesy of Michael Kidd and one of the most charming performances ever captured on film(from Danny of course) Danny Kaye is a treasure- without him this film would have been a minor movie, with him it's a classic.

This film should be made available on DVD. Why has Danny Kaye neglected when it comes to DVD? So few of his films are available.

History speaks

Jose Ferrer acted in more than 100 movies and TV episodes. One of his sons, Miguel Ferrer, and a nephew, George Clooney, followed successfully his steps in the movie business. All this was not an accident. Jose Ferrer's Oscar winning performance in Cyrano De Bergerac in 1950 was followed 8 years later in I Accuse! Although not winning another Oscar, his portrayal of a French Jewish artillery captain, Alfred Dreyfus, falsely accused of treason in 1894, sentenced and sent to Devil's Island, makes one feel what the relative of actor Richard Dreyfus felt while publicly being degraded, his sword broken and what he had to live in the tropical God forgotten Atlantic island, 7 miles off the coast of French Guiana, where he was sent at the beginning of 1895. Many people stood for him, like French writer Emile Zola and one can check it in Paul Muni's The Life of Emile Zola, but there is NO DVD RELEASE OF "I ACCUSE"! So I Accuse the studio MGM or whoever has the rights now days, of negligence in not releasing this movie on DVD. I can write down a thousand titles list of crap movies released by MGM, worthless garbage, in the past 20 or so years, but they had to miss this one. Shame on whoever is in charge of selecting which movies to be released on DVD and which not. Who died and made him God in that department? Wake up MGM and deal with this. I bet anything that I'm not the only one that wants that movie released on DVD.

fascinating but awkward Cold War melodrama, with familiar exploitation names

The backstory of this film is perhaps more interesting than the film itself--director Robert Dertano of Gun Girls and Girl Gang fame, teamed with exploitation photographer William C. Thompson, teamed with Tor Johnson (in one scene only), teamed with producer Stephen Apostolof (aka A. C. Stephen)whose own story as a refugee from communist Bulgaria this film tells. In its waning days (from 1955 on), Republic Pictures distributed some off-beat films in order to pad out its release schedule, as the studio no longer produced much of its own product. While Republic films were usually low-budget, they always had a slick, professional, assembly-line quality. However,This film has the murky, minimalist, semi-professional look of Dertano's earlier exploitation classics, and the first third of it is chock-full of stock footage and newsreel clips of riots and foreign cities. The difference is that instead of being set in drug dens and abortion doctors' offices, this film tries in its no-budget way to suggest foreign settings, which gives it an odd, otherworldly feeling, like the interiors in a 1930s z-grade jungle film. Also, the first two-thirds of the film feature a first-person narration from a Bulgarian communist official's point-of-view, a sort of "We'll bury you" kind of snide, threatening narration, although this is dropped after a certain point. I'm not sure about star Jacques Scott's accent, but otherwise he does a convincing job as an ambitious but naive freedom-loving refugee. The rest of the cast, some of whom will be familiar from exploitation films, are semi-amateur. Apostolof/Stephen is credited with production of the film, and with the "industry professionals" he relied on being Thompson and Dertano, it's no wonder the film has such a seedy look and semi-amateur feel. The melodramatic turn of the plot in the last half of the film really takes the film away from any anti-communist, freedom-loving message and turns it into low-grade melodrama. A fascinating curio that is of historic significance, but JOURNEY TO FREEDOM is not really that entertaining and, ironically, will probably appeal most to fans of Dertano's other films such as WRESTLING RACKET GIRLS or GUN GIRLS. It's a shame that they didn't think to cast Timothy Farrell in this film--what a great communist boss he would have made, or a sleazy party operative! Apostolof's next film was eight years later, ORGY OF THE DEAD. Both films have a few things in common--an idea that is more interesting than the actual product, a number of recognizable exploitation names, and a film that has a good "angle" to market but is actually somewhat boring to watch.

Routine pirate adventure from director Sergio Grieco.

This film catches Sergio Grieco in the middle of a number of low-budget adventure films he directed based on Italian history. Filmed originally in color, this appeared a few years later in U.S. drive-ins in a tawdry black-and-white version, which strips the film of any lustre it may have possessed on the big screen. Thus, it is hard to appreciate what the director had in mind when shooting the film, and one must refer to "Lo Spadaccino Misterioso" and others to see what was being done in the genre at that period. There is quite a bit of action in this one, but somehow, the charisma is lacking. After viewing this three or four times, I found that the film doesn't really get much better after the first viewing, and I'll have to hope that a color version (preferably letterboxed) shows up some day, so that I can better evauluate this film. Nevertheless, it features some great faces, and an over-the-top raid by Moorish pirates. The ending revenge scene is also particularly memorable.

Why Don't They Leave Us Alone -

I am very prejudiced here as my Dad served out in the Western Desert with his courageous RNF comrades under such harsh conditions that few today can even begin to understand. I cannot speak for my Dad but I firmly believe that he would have liked much of this film (so that's why I like it for starters) whilst being very polite about its failings with his wry grin and a knowing glint in the eye. Its strengths are good characters who all play their parts in a story that does have you willing them on and on in their battle against the Nazi baddies, the unforgiving Sun and the relentless sand. Richard Attenborough is particularly excellent throughout, as is Percy Herbert when playing a solo part in one of the Fifties greatest short war scenes. If all directors were made to study this scene they could learn much, but what do I know! Thank goodness the film is still shown in black and white and this should always remain so. I liked this film so I say to all old fogeys and inquisitive but sensible youngsters just give it a watch and enjoy the film for what it is. The LRDG were incredibly brave men.

Review :

Dull, literal-minded version of a good Maugham novel.

I love Somerset Maugham's novels, but they tend to be full of internal monologues and emotional and spiritual struggles that can be difficult to dramatize (his short stories make much better material for movies). THE PAINTED VEIL is a terrific book and a good read, veering from sexual melodrama to spiritual regeneration, full of psychological insight, tension and vivid descriptions of life in China during a cholera epidemic.

But this movie is just dreadful. It's dull, literal-minded and a travesty of a great story and promising concept. The credibility problems start (but don't end) with the fact that handsome Bill Travers was miscast as the cuckold. Tall and masculine with sensual features, a brooding sexiness, and a resonant, beautiful voice, it's absurd that we are expected to believe he is unappealing to Eleanor Parker. How can she not want to grab him and ride him ten ways from Sunday? I have often liked beautiful Eleanor Parker, but her archness here is hard to take and not what the part needs. The only bright spot is George Sanders, cast against type as a warm, sympathetic guy.

One thing I'm curious about is why Vincente Minnelli abandoned the project (his name appears nowhere in the final credits). Had he directed it (preferably in Technicolor) it might at least have been more enjoyable. Skip this dreary soap opera. Or if you see it and actually like it, read Somerset Maugham's novel, which is far better and certainly more entertaining.

In search of a father.

Like the precedent user said, all that will follow in Penn's best works is already here:the search of a father, the marginal hero, incapable of becoming part of a community. In "Miracle worker", which I look upon as his masterpiece,Helen's father is thoroughly unable to communicate with his daughter who immures herself in her autism. In "the chase" Robert Redford's character has been an outcast for his whole life.In "Bonnie and Clyde" ,not only Penn depicts par excellence marginal characters but he also introduces CW Moss's character ,whose father is a mean old man,and who loves the two gangsters as his parents.

At the beginning of the movie ,Billy is still a boy searching for his identity. His boss, who reads him the Bible ("through a glass, darkly"),gives him what he's longing for.One must notice that the relationship Billy/his boss-father is too short on the screen to be really convincing. This is accentuated by the fact that the supporting cast is faceless, and once his "dad" is dead,Newman carries the movie on his own:his performance is typically "actor's studio",very deep, very introspective,in a nutshell he plays Billy as he would play a Tennesse Williams character. We're far from the western actor, such as John Wayne or Joel McCrea. The sentence "I do not want you" often comes in the lines and drives Billy to despair and violence.Actually it's the last sentence he hears from the man he loves so much.

Because they have no shoulder to lean on,Penn's heroes are doomed oedipean human beings and except for Helen in "Miracle worker",their destiny leaves them no hope.

Bridey Murphy Lives

It's not surprising that the Bridey Murphy phenomenon would turn up on the silver screen, even if it's only a low-budget Bowery Boys production. In 1956, a Pueblo, CO housewife claimed to have been "regressed" under hypnosis to a previous life as an Irish farm girl, complete with Irish brogue, etc. For some reason, it caught on and became a brief national fad with all kinds of similar claims being made.

Here, Sach gets regressed to a former life as a 17th century English fop, where he encounters pirate Blackbeard and his treasure. Back in modern time, the boys go after the treasure, ahead of the bad guys, they hope, while busty blonde Jane Nigh provides brassy eye candy.

Aside from the predictable hi-jinks, Hall (Sach) gets to show off some real acting skills, getting to play more than just his usual buffoonish character. Rather poignant to think how many of those skills went unused once he settled into playing Sach. (An interview with him would be interesting.) Clements does okay as Gorcey's replacement, but Gorcey really makes a better tough-talking Moe (The Three Stooges) to Sach's ever-befuddled Curley. All in all— the 60-minutes provides something of a departure for both the plot and and actor Hall, but with no more chuckles than usual.

Beautiful production, but it needed more humor and heart...

James MacArthur is very good in early role as young white man in 1760s Philadelphia who, years earlier, was kidnapped and raised by the Delaware Indian tribe, now being traded back to his people as part of a peace agreement. The white man's customs have the kid alienated and sullen, but a sympathetic frontiersman and a lovely servant-girl try to help him adjust. MacArthur has a great masculine stance and a firm jaw--and he's unhurt by his Mohawk haircut--but he's perhaps too rigid; the character might have stood some silly, self-effacing moments. Everything in this adaptation of Conrad Richter's book is taken with the utmost seriousness, but where's the heart of the piece? And with whom should our sympathies lie? Wendell Corey overdoes his role as a town bully--not only racist and a liar, but an alcoholic as well--though Fess Parker's good-hearted scout relieves some of the tension in this solemn scenario. Carol Lynley makes her film debut (playing a white girl named, of all things, Shenandoe!); she's sweet flirting with MacArthur, and looks like Alice in Wonderland in her apron-dresses. Well-produced Walt Disney effort given by-the-books treatment, as if it were written and directed by stodgy history professors, though still engaging for fans of old-fashioned entertainment. *** from ****

Child Labor

The title role in The Missouri Traveler is played by young Brandon DeWilde, his last role essentially as a child star. Soon he'd be doing such adult stuff as Blue Denim, Hud, and In Harm's Way.

It's a nostalgic look at life at the turn of the last century in a small Missouri town where orphan kid Brandon DeWilde stops and decides to stay a while.

This is a nice easy to take film, moving along at a leisurely pace, but actually it has some serious issues. This is an orphan kid making his own way in the world, a world I might add without child labor laws. Young DeWilde is working for his keep, both as a sharecropper and as a horse trainer, well at least an assistant trainer.

Paul Ford gets a preparatory performance in this film for his later role as the mayor of River City in The Music Man. DeWilde has a couple of adult role models, the cynical Lee Marvin the guy who worked his way up to the top and the loquacious Gary Merrill who is the town newspaper editor. Both give DeWilde some good lessons about life.

In fact both Merrill and Marvin get into a knock down drag out fight that was copied, but lovingly from John Ford's The Quiet Man.

The Missouri Traveler was released through Buena Vista Productions in the beginning years of that company before it exclusively was the distributor for Walt Disney. It's a nice film, especially for family viewing with a lot of good lessons in it.

Cry Baby Killer, The (1958)

*** (out of 4)

This is somewhat of a Holy Grail for me because I've been dying to see this flick since I became a fan of Jack Nicholson back in the late 80s. I've been pretty lucky to know people who own rare movies but not a single one ever had this film and in fact, I never he knew anyone who had actually seen it. In the film Nicholson (in his debut) plays a hot headed teen who is upset when the town's tough guy steals his girl. After being jumped, Nicholson gets ahold of a gun, kills the tough guy and then takes another man, a woman and her baby hostage. A tough as nails cop (Harry Lauter) tries to talk him out as the television station and onlookers gather outside. This moral/teenage flick is in the same vein as Rebel Without a Cause but it stands out due in large part to being Nicholson's debut. I wouldn't say he gives a good performance as he goes way too over the top in a few scenes but you can see certain trademarks that'll show up in some of his classic performances. The scenes with him screaming at the crying baby get some unintentional laughs as does a few other scenes but this just adds to the cult appeal. Since this film is on DVD now I'm sure it will become a cult classic of the Drive-In teenage films. Producer Roger Corman and screenwriter Leo Gordon have cameos.

Try to ignore the ludicrous title

Despite the dreadful title, this is a well made, thought provoking Sci-fi film. A young bride discovers that her husband is not the man she fell in love with, but a hideous alien in a specially constructed shell. The thought provoking part, is the ambiguous character of the aliens. At first you are convinced that these ugly creatures are on earth for evil intent. as the film progresses, you are aware of their desperation to survive, even if they have to kill to do it. In one excellent scene, a hooded alien stares longingly at a doll in a shop window, and then ruthlessly kills one of the locals without a second thought. this stimulates both compassion and revulsion. Both Gloria Talbott and Tom Tryon as the leading actors, give good understated performances, and in the final scene, Tryons' alien becomes a terribly pathetic creature whose only desire was to see the continuation of his race. Are the aliens good or evil? the jury is still out.

A good B-pic, worth a look

I caught this minor gem many years back on afternoon tv. I was very entertained by the plot of an American Army officer who is stationed in contemporary (late 50's) England, suffers a brain injury that blinds him, and while trying to find the address of a friend enters the wrong flat (still blind), gets thumped on the head by an unknown assailant who promptly takes off, and leaves our hero cured of his blindness--and in the middle of a big crime conspiracy...all in the first ten minutes of the film! Movie buffs may remember this for Michael Caine's bottom-listing in the opening credits(it turns out he has lot more to do with the plot than first apparent. My favorite feature of this is hero Robert Mackenzie( whom you may recognize as the antagonist Gibbons in "Fiend Without A Face") trying very hard --and almost succeeding--in hiding his Scots accent. If you see it in your listings, give it a look.

Review :

Another huge success for Hammer Horror!

Hammer Horror's sequel to their initial success, 'The Curse of Frankenstein' features more of that campy style and extreme inventiveness that made the first one such a delight. The original outing almost followed the original story (with a few changes), but for this sequel the rule book has been completely thrown out, which leaves the Hammer team to do what they do best - invent and adapt! Peter Cushing returns in one of the roles that cemented him as a horror superstar – namely Baron Frankenstein. Cushing's performance as the evil doctor is magnificent and he does it so well that you really imagine it being done by anyone else. Cushing has a demeanour that lends itself well to subtly evil characters like Baron Frankenstein, and that is capitalised upon brilliantly for this movie. Cushing is most certainly the star of the show, but also impressing is Francis Matthews as the impressionable young doctor who becomes Frankenstein's assistant, and Michael Gwynn as the monster. He's no Christopher Lee, but Hammer couldn't really have hired him back now could they?

Terence Fisher shows us why he's Hammer's finest director with this film. The direction is more than solid, and Fisher makes the best of many intriguing scenarios including the opening which sees a guillotine ready to punish the Baron for his past sins, and a lovely sequence involving Frankenstein's monster crashing a high society dinner. Anything can happen in a Hammer film, and quite often does and that's what makes them such great viewing. Hammer films have a great style that is very easily to like and make for fun viewing. However, this film isn't without a point as it depicts the horrors of vanity and wanting a new body, while also tying in the classic Frankenstein theme of the ills of playing god.

This sequel is continually compelling and very entertaining. It features a brilliant performance from Peter Cushing, and for those reasons and more it comes with my highest recommendations.
