Review :

Horrible, yet funny enough to watch again

Funny movie. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 material all the way. I would guess, due to the rough and shoddy editing, that the movie was originally longer than 60 minutes.

Interesting that there are two scenes that escaped the censors of 1958 -A see through peignoir and the cop's hairy chest shown when his shirt is ripped open during a fight.

I personally love these old B movies and while this one was not up to the usual "standards" of early horror films, it had some truly giggity moments. (Heavy breathing by the brain eaters and the pipe stem antenna where great touches.)

I rated it a 7 due to the abundance of truly bad acting, dialog and editing. It doesn't get much worse than this which is what makes it so good.

evocation of a long gone era

By some chance i watched this film yesterday morning,and in the afternoon i drove past the spot in Kilburn where the exterior had been constructed on my way to an organ concert at the Gaumont State Kilburn.I also passed the site of the Classic Kilburn,now a petrol station,which was the sort of cinema epitomised by "The Bijou".In the 1950s,when the film was made,there were a lot of cinemas,or flea pits as we called them like "The Bijou".Mainly surviving on revivals of old films.The Classic chain in particular.I loved these old cinemas,and although they were not as rundown as "the Bijou" they still had seen better days.Unfortunately many of these cinemas were located in high streets and thus were prime targets for the newly emerging phenomenon of supermarkets.So not only is this film a comedic masterpiece but to me it is a warm reminder of the passing of these marvelous places.

Sentimental tale of grandma thinking she has found a lost grandson

The cast is excellent (Ethel Barrymore, Cecil Kellaway, Stuart Whitman, Carolyn Jones) and the story not bad. Ethel, in a wheelchair, owns her apartment in a hotel that becomes a young man's college dorm. She soon civilizes the guys and they are calling her "nanna" and taking tea and cake. Ethel has a chance to redeem herself for a sin of the past that drove her son away, never to be heard from again. It arises through Whitman's character who has her name (Chandler). Whitman, in an early film, is a bit wild, a bit shaken by war, and having a go with Carolyn Jones, who makes her mark, as usual. All 4 of these players make their mark here. Kellaway knows how to add subtlety to a role. Whitman conveys roughness, vulnerability, confusion, independence all in one. Carolyn is smitten but still independent. Ethel is a master at psychology, and she even gets to read a little Shakespeare.

The film almost seems like a TV show at times because a good deal of it is inside the dorm. Overall, it gets quite sugary and sentimental, which is my main reason for making it a 5, not a 6. It also tends to lethargy, even with one fistfight. There just isn't that much action. Jesse White provides good support as usual.

Whitman came late in the Hollywood cycle, so that once the 60s came in with its altered views and casting, he went more into TV series. He had a long career and probably is an underrated actor. I've never seen him not bring something to any part and handle it very well indeed. Carolyn Jones never failed to make her parts interesting. Miss Barrymore is of course of an iconic family of stage and screen. She tended to get type cast into motherly, grandmotherly, matronly, elderly roles that she filled out smoothly. Kellaway is unforgettable in The Postman Always Rings Twice. He always provides strong yet unobtrusive support.

Totally depressing account of the British defeat at Dunkirk

I saw this movie in the years when I was an aficionado of war movies. Of course, most of the movies I saw showed the Allies winning the war. This one was totally different. The British were in retreat and were constantly being interdicted by artillery, tank fire, Messerschmits and Stuka dive bombers. Actually, I don't even remember German infantry engaging them. Of course in the end, they were evacuated by the Royal Navy with lots of assistance from civilian yachts, fishing boats and what have you.

The events at Dunkirk should be the subject of another major film, this time also showing the German side. It is a mystery to this day why the German Panzer divisions were halted by Hitler when they were well within striking distance of the almost helpless British armies. War historian Capt. Basil Liddel Hart recounting (The German Generals Talk) what German generals (Guderian, Runstedt et al) told him immediately after the war explained that Hitler wasn't keen on destroying the military might of the British. He allegedly believed that the British Empire was a stabilizing influence in the world. At the same time, he counted the British as among his concept of the Aryan race as they are descended from Germanic tribes. His wish was that the British would recognize the hegemony of Germany over mainland Europe.

Robert G.L Waite, however, in what may called a psychological-psychiatric biography of Hitler in his The Psychopathic God gives another explanation. In what may be viewed as an analysis based on Freud's (and also Jung's) belief in a death wish instinct in humans, he proposes that Hitler subconsciously wanted to fail at the very brink of his absolute triumph.

the picturing does it

'Sait-on jamais' (= French for 'one never knows') is a typical Vadim-film: a nice picturing supports the public mood of its times -- while containing a pretty meagre plot.

As the public mood of 1957 is beyond memory for most of us, the nice picturing of Venice at the times is all that's left to us. Unfortunately, that's not enough.

the barely adequate quality of 'Sait-on jamais' is also illustrated by the necessary support of Arnoul's nakedness. Daring to the standards of 1957.

All in all, 'Sait-on jamais' is a film you do not want to see twice.

Oddly Memorable

A patient released prematurely from a mental hospital tries to find a new life at a roadside stopover.

I can't imagine more than ten people saw this little oddity in a theatre. I expect the movie's risky downer material got made because it was so cheap to produce. Reviewer bmacy's right —the budget is rock bottom, a few shots of the Malibu coastline, an office interior, and that's pretty much it, along with a minimal cast. So why has the movie stayed with me over the years, instead of being just another forgotten cheapo.

The film's not a minor gem—that would be too much of a stretch. Instead, I think Danton's performance manages a level that truly disturbs, especially with the tight script and noirish background. Catch the occasional little motion or grimace betraying Roy's (Danton) inner turmoil as he struggles with a society full of minor pressures. It's a carefully calibrated performance that shows how an emotive "more" can be expressed by a judicious "less". And since Roy is basically a likable guy, his plight becomes doubly affecting as he tries to blend into a normal life. That last lonely shot of him is, I think, one of the more disturbing to come out of the generally cheerful 1950's.

On a different note—I suspect Hitchcock, also at Universal at the time, caught this minor production since the project bears certain key similarities to Psycho (1960). Consider, for example, the roadside motel, the disturbed personality, the brutal murder, along with the symbolic use of birds, in this case sea gulls. Nothing really hangs on the comparison, except maybe the notion that a widely acclaimed classic managed to grow out of an obscure seedbed. Anyway, this little oddity has its own peculiar virtues, so catch up with it if you can.
