Totally depressing account of the British defeat at Dunkirk

I saw this movie in the years when I was an aficionado of war movies. Of course, most of the movies I saw showed the Allies winning the war. This one was totally different. The British were in retreat and were constantly being interdicted by artillery, tank fire, Messerschmits and Stuka dive bombers. Actually, I don't even remember German infantry engaging them. Of course in the end, they were evacuated by the Royal Navy with lots of assistance from civilian yachts, fishing boats and what have you.

The events at Dunkirk should be the subject of another major film, this time also showing the German side. It is a mystery to this day why the German Panzer divisions were halted by Hitler when they were well within striking distance of the almost helpless British armies. War historian Capt. Basil Liddel Hart recounting (The German Generals Talk) what German generals (Guderian, Runstedt et al) told him immediately after the war explained that Hitler wasn't keen on destroying the military might of the British. He allegedly believed that the British Empire was a stabilizing influence in the world. At the same time, he counted the British as among his concept of the Aryan race as they are descended from Germanic tribes. His wish was that the British would recognize the hegemony of Germany over mainland Europe.

Robert G.L Waite, however, in what may called a psychological-psychiatric biography of Hitler in his The Psychopathic God gives another explanation. In what may be viewed as an analysis based on Freud's (and also Jung's) belief in a death wish instinct in humans, he proposes that Hitler subconsciously wanted to fail at the very brink of his absolute triumph.
