Review :
Bissell Bears Up
Modern day descendant of the mad doctor creates his own monster, a teenage one.
What can you say about a drive-in special where the special effects appear assembled from a garbage can. This 1957 version of Frankenstein makes Karloff's 1931 mask look like Handsome Harry. In fact, the color close-up at the end almost shows the chicken wire holding the whole silly contraption together. My grandkid could do better with a glue gun and the kitchen trash heap. But what the heck no teenager of the time cared as long as there was a place in the dark to park.
On the other side of the coin, there's something to be said for the great Whit Bissell as the mad doctor. This is likely the only "starring" role of his prolific career and he makes the most of it. No tongue-in-cheek here. He's dead serious throughout, treating the grade-z material as though it were Shakespeare. In my little book, that's real courage under fire and I hope there's a special place in Hollywood heaven for old troupers like him.
Meanwhile, this typically tacky, slowly paced teen epic is only for hard-core nostalgia buffs, like me.
