Mr. and Mrs. Hillman sort out a series of murders while on vacation
"Damen I Svart" means "The lady in black", and she is both a ghost in an old tale and a contemporary murderer in a spooky old home with all the trappings, such as elaborate stairwells, dusty paintings, swinging chandeliers and a maze of dark rooms. Nearby is a sawmill, a stream, woods, and a swampy area, all good for disposing of dead bodies.
The deep focus camera work and the shadows provide a noir ambiance to this well-acted and staged mystery story, which proceeds at a rather leisurely pace that allows us to sort out the characters and guess who the murderer might be. The IMDb rating of 6.4 is about right. I've rounded my 6.5 up to 7.
It feels somewhat strange to watch a Swedish movie that reflects the American tradition of a private detective couple as in Nick and Nora Charles or Mr. and Mrs. North, immersed in a setting where murders are occurring and they are attempting to find out by whom. The couple here are John and Kaisa Hillman, fully co-equals, each taking the initiative on his or her own. They are assisted by a capable comic actor who has an eye for a pretty blonde model who is modeling for a sculptress.
Recommended for mystery fans.
