A love triangle, the past invades the present. Mario, a shy man new in Livorno, chats up a crying woman on a bridge. She's Natalia, waiting for a lover gone for a year who promised to return. For three nights, Mario accompanies Natalia, assists her, distracts her, dances with her. He falls in love with her. Can he pull Natalia into his arms, away from the past and from love for a man who will probably never return?

It's still a neorealistic movie of Visconti

If you adapt a story of Dostoevsky then either you go awful, either you make a masterpiece. This is a masterpiece. The film is about the superiority of the true dreamer. All the action is structured on pairs of two levels: real and fantasy, modern and old, dynamic and static. Those worlds are not completely separated because there is a bridge. The action takes place either in his world (modern, real, dynamic), trying to make her come with him, showing all the beauties of this world, either in her world of fantasy where he can have only limited access. She is showing her that in her world your will and imagination has all the power. She is a stranger in the new part of town, but so is he in the old part. This geographical distinction is at the base of all other contrasts. But this outing in fantasy doesn't spoil the neorealistic characteristics of the movie. It is thickening it. It shows that if you live in fantasy you still have contact with the real and the real is supporting you. The artificial settings is thus a „denaturation" of the real, so first you have to have the real to make something.
