A talented songwriter of sambas is forced to face the social injustices of the city around him.

Review :

Dated but historically important film helped Brazilian Cinema find its own legitimate voice

In 1955, 27 year-old director Nelson Pereira dos Santos took Brazilian cinema by storm with his feature film debut, the ground-breaking and independently made "Rio 40 Graus", the single most important Brazilian film of the 1950s, changing Brazilian cinema forever. NPS took a bold, rough look at Brazilian reality following Italian Neo-Realism principles: talking about "real people with real problems", working on location, improvising, mixing professional and non-professional actors, choosing "ordinary" daily stuff as themes, refusing "beautiful" photography and "beautiful" stars, avoiding patronizing treatment of "the happy poor". It was the movie that inspired the Brazilian Cinema Novo (New Cinema) Movement of the 1960s, as it dealt with "uncomfortable" but urgent social issues and, even more importantly, proved that independent production was possible for young filmmakers.

"Rio Zona Norte" (1957) is NPS's following film, the second of a planned trilogy about Rio de Janeiro (the third one was to be called "Rio Zona Sul" but was never made -- though his 1967's "El Justicero" might fill in for the part). It's the story of black samba composer Espírito da Luz (Brazil's most popular black star Grande Otelo), who lives in dire poverty in one of Rio's Northern Zone's favelas (slums), whose only joy in life is music and whose major dream is to have singing star Ângela Maria (playing herself) record one of his sambas. He suffers a railroad accident and, as he agonizes, recalls his miserable life: his unsuccessful attempts to break through the corrupt music business of the 1950s, when it was still common practice for samba composers to sell their songs (and copyrights) to famous singers and agents; the sleazy song-stealing music agent (Jece Valadão) who poses as benefactor and friend; his doomed, delinquent son (Haroldo de Oliveira); his lover (a single mother) who abandons Espírito as she realizes his dream of celebrity is an illusion; his white classic musician friend (Paulo Goulart) who promises to help him but is all good intentions and no action. Espírito's songs are stolen to the same effect as the bicycle in De Sica's Neo-Reealist classic: what's stolen is the only possible means to dignified living and citizenship.

Based on the real-life experiences of great samba composer Zé Kéti (who wrote the songs for "Rio Zona Norte" and has a cameo as singer Alaôr, and for whose memory NPS directed his 2001 documentary "Meu Compadre Zé Kéti"), "RioZN" avows NPS's artistic and political commitment as he places doomed, pauper black people at the center of his movie, something unthinkable until then in Brazilian films, and deals with uncomfortable (and perhaps far too many) themes: racism, social prejudice, the state's failure to assist the poor, illiteracy (Espírito's inability to write down his own music is an important part of the story), single motherhood, juvenile delinquency, corruption in the music business, the sterile patronizing of intellectuals and the petty bourgeoisie (a self-criticism NPS -- white and educated himself -- is smart enough to make).

NPS slips into some patronizing himself -- most of the poor are "bons sauvages"; the whites, politicians, bourgeois are mostly shady characters. The film is hampered by excessive sentimentality (a major problem with many Italian Neo-Realism films) and occasionally phony dialogs. "Rio Zona Norte" seems dated today, much more so than "Rio 40 Graus"; perhaps because in the last 50 years we've been consistently hardened by the escalating bleakness in reality and films. Violence in the favelas of 1955 was limited to fist fights and jackknives, instead of the lethal weaponry of military proportions that dominate the favelas today (q.v. the 1999 documentary "Notícias de uma Guerra Particular"). What hasn't dated -- and it's shocking to realize it -- is the unchanged poverty of Rio's favelas, confirming the State's total failure and lack of interest in assisting the destitute, or, as some have put it, in keeping them perennially segregated.

Still, some scenes resist well: Espírito trying to comb down his wiry hair in his desolate shack; the new song he sings at the samba school; and especially the scene where the most famous Brazilian singing star of the 1950s, Ângela Maria -- young, pretty and a real-life example of rags-to-riches -- sings Espírito's samba in her unique, effortless, then magnificent voice. Otelo's performance here, as he experiences his composer's dream come true, is amazing: his face suddenly opens up and his eyes glow with joy and heartfelt emotion.

As with De Sica and Rossellini, NPS mixes professional (most of them) and non-professional actors. Grande Otelo was then at the height of his popularity — he has the perfect Fach for the role (he's almost like a black male Giulietta Masina, and just as short, clownish, funny, moving and talented) and hits the right notes most of the time, only rarely slipping into over-acting. Jece Valadão, as the sleazy agent, is at once virile, seductive, and deceitful with his rugged good looks, showcasing the star quality that would lead to his long career as macho anti-hero. Paulo Goulart tries his best with his difficult, "guilty" white bourgeois role but certainly looks handsome and sensitive. The supporting cast varies from effective to amateurish.

The favela locations, starkly captured by Hélio Silva's camera, and the songs by Zé Keti are the soul of the movie. Unfortunately, Alexandre and Radamés Gnattali's mellow, grandiose score fights with the bleak images of the simple story, and is to blame for much of the "sentimental" tone (just as Alessandro Cicognini's and Renzo Rossellini's music hampered much of Italian Neo-Realism starkness).

If you're interested in Brazilian film history or if you're are a fan of NPS, Grande Otelo, Angela Maria or the "other side" of Rio in the 1950s you can't miss "Rio Zona Norte"; others, be prepared for a dated, now naive, but still forceful, never boring film.

Take 90 Minutes for Yourself, Instead of This

June Allyson, Jeff Chandler, Mary Astor, Sandra Dee, Peter Graves and Charles Coburn star in this forgettable film. In fact, the only thing memorable about it, is that it is basically pretty awful save for some good performances by June Allyson, Jeff Chandler, and especially Mary Astor.

Peter Graves is Mary's son and June's newlywed husband who went off to war and died. It is shown in flashbacks just how it all happened. Mary wants Jeff Chandler to recommend the Medal of Honor for her son and his sacrifice for his country. But Jeff, who served with him, has some issues in doing so.

Just what makes this film so bad is the writing. Apparently this was based on previous material, but the dialogue was terrible, even from the very beginning. It's terrible to see all involved reduced to such embarrassing material. But, even given what she had to work with, Mary Astor still managed to come out looking better than her costars. That shows how great an actress she is.

What tops them all is Sandra Dee as a girl trying to act grownup and throwing herself at Jeff Chandler. I still can't get over her character in this movie. The whole thing was an embarrassment for all considered. I give it a '3', I guess, because producer Ross Hunter knows how to cast a movie. The actors must have needed the money badly.

But if you come across this movie and are curious about it, please walk on by! It ain't worth the 90 minutes of your life.

Another bizarre and disturbing fairytale from Childhood Productions!

Well, this film is certainly one of the best fairy tales released by Childhood Productions, but then again that isn't saying very much. This film is best seen solely for laughs, although you'de be hard-pressed to find it anywhere nowadays. The acting is typically dire, the plot is the usual bizarre pastiche of old fairy tales, and Tom Thumb keeps changing size. I saw it here in Britain a few days ago on a program which makes fun of B-Movies... I thought that it was quite funny, but I expect that in it's complete form it would be torture to watch. My Advice: See Snow White and Rose Red, another Childhood Productions classic.

Review :

This secret hardly worth keeping.

`The Secret Place' is an average little caper film apart from a tense jewel robbery sequence. It begins with a wind-up gramophone (which becomes important to the plot) playing some dire English pop song of the day. The `day' is the mid-nineteenfifties and flattened bombsites are much in evidence in the back streets of London's East End.

Clive Donner made one of my favorite films, the biting black comedy about the English class system, `Nothing but the Best' but this, his directorial debut, is a much more pedestrian effort with plodding dialogue and a plot holding few surprises.

The one highlight, however, is the performance of David McCallum of `Man from Uncle' infamy. Wearing a leather jacket and obviously under the influence of Brando and Dean he tries to portray the classic `crazy, mixed-up kid' so common in the popular culture of the fifties. Attempting teenage angst, he only manages to display the symptoms of constipation. Another central character, Ronald Lewis wears a huge, Brylcreemed Elvis Presley-style quiff.

Nevertheless both her determination and her shapely figure impress Sal Satori, the organizer, so much that he gives her a job as a carnival dancer. He becomes her friend and, before long, her great love. However, being a hootchie-kootchie dancer is not Jeanne's dream: she wants to be an actress. That is why Jeanne takes advantage of the Satori company being in New York to consult a renowned drama teacher, Mrs. Neilson. The latter thinks she CAN act and she is proved right since the audience of the first play Jeanne is in responds favorably. But Jeanne will only feel wholly satisfied when she acquires star status. She soon obtains the part which will lead her to stardom by stealing it from Elsie Desmond, an aging actress who planned a comeback through it. In desperation, Elsie commits suicide. Although feeling somewhat guilty, Jeanne openly relishes her triumph, which upsets her ...

Review :

There they go again!

It is amazing how badly Hollywood studios recreated past eras in their biopics. This atrociously dishonest and downright stupid movie about the great Jeanne Eagels is one of the worst. Only haphazard efforts are made to ground the story in the actual era (roughly the teens of the last century to 1929). Occasionally you can spot a few actors dressed and coiffed properly to the time depicted, but you have to look carefully to find them. The music veers between glossy 50s "smooth romance" to jarring, melodramatic accents which attempt to supply emotional power to scenes so badly written they would either put you to sleep or make you laugh. It goes without saying that poor Kim Novak in the title role is miles out of her league, not to mention miscast. Perhaps that's why the hacks who created the scenario decided to make her a carnival hootch dancer in the early scenes, just to show off her splendid physique - at the expense of the real story of a brilliantly talented midwestern girl who plunged passionately into serious acting before she was 10 years old and worked her way up to Broadway stardom over many years. Who would want to see THAT? Around 30 minutes into the implausible proceedings Agnes Moorehead shows up as a Broadway drama teacher; she makes a grand entrance and gives it all she's got and for a moment we feel the movie may be somewhat salvaged - but no. There is too much working against her. Eventually she too sinks into the torpidity surrounding her. For some incomprehensible reason half of the movie - which is supposed to be about a woman whose life played out in and around the legitimate theatre - is set in various amusement parks. Yes, we know that according to the writers of this abomination, Eagels was emotionally close to a carnival impresario (Jeff Chandler in a mighty but futile effort), but there is no other inherent connection between those settings and the story. The scenes that do take place in theatres are so ineptly conceived you wonder if the writers had ever set foot in such establishments. But the real crime here is that the life of Eagels is made boring in the extreme. It wouldn't be surprising if it were revealed that Jacqueline Susann had been inspired to write VALLEY OF THE DOLLS by this garbage; if not, then surely the makers of that movie must have studied it before their own cameras rolled in 1967. But at least DOLLS was hilarious.

Another "bewitching" teaming of James Stewart and Kim Novak.

Made in the same year as "Vertigo," this is an equally bewitching movie, though in a much lighter vein. It's set in an enchanted New York during the winter: Kim Novak is a witch who casts a spell over James Stewart, but gets caught in it instead. The interesting sidelight is that Novak's rival is played by Janice Rule, who originated the part of Madge in "Picnic" on Broadway (the part that Novak would make famous on film).

Doctors and nurses of a children's hospital confront the challenges of their profession.

Review :

Good looking children's hospital procedural

Directed by Cyril Frankel from Anne Burnaby's screenplay, with an all-star cast of fine British players, several from the great English classic era, this is a good, and good-looking children's "hospital procedural". There are some extremely touching moments, some bordering on the sentimental, but in the best sense of that word – have several hankies ready. Basically plot less, the film's episodic story-telling follows the career of young novice nurse, Margaret, well played by the beautiful Sylvia Syms, as she tries to navigate the many trials and tribulations of her chosen, noble profession, in a somewhat idealized hospital setting (all in color!), with its staff of doctors, surgeons, "sisters" (nurses), and last but not least, the children. A romantic, but somewhat questionable, out-of-place plot element has young, inexperienced Syms unsuccessfully trying to snare handsome but confirmed bachelor doc, George Baker. The romance doesn't last long and is happily replaced by all the standard hospital dramas: children being brought in suffering from various traumas, battling various illnesses, desperate, anguished parents, very dedicated, sympathetic hospital staff.

The notable cast includes Anna Neagle, at 53, somewhat beyond her prime as perhaps England's most popular actress of the '30s into the '40s, but still beautiful, and wonderful as hospital matron, in one of the film's most moving scenes, as she rescues two children from an abusive mother. Flora Robson, as Sister Birch, delivers the films finest moment as she firmly, yet gently admonishes young Syms who is falling apart at the near death of one of her charges. Robson gets our vote as one of Britain's ten greatest actresses. The always fine Anthony Quayle, who is the kind and gentle hospital head doctor, was teamed with Syms in a very different film of the same year, the superb, mature and intelligent, "Woman in a Dressing Gown". Michael Hordern portrays the curmudgeonly-but-kindhearted head surgeon, and a young Joan Hickson, who plays the fussy, brooking-no-nonsense yet, humorous Sister Duckworth is remembered as TV's Miss Marple.

The initial evidence is circumstantial but points to Leonard as the murderer. Fun with Charles and Marlene

To see "Witness for the Prosecution" for the first time in 2008 is a jolting surprise. Nobody could do it better than Billy Wilder did in 1957. A man accused of murder, Tyrone Power, the weakest link in this terrific chain. Sir Wilfred is called to defend him, he is played by the extraordinary Charles Laughton, but he's just out of hospital - he wasn't dismissed he was expelled - and due to doctor's orders he's not to take any criminal cases. He finds Power charming and personable enough but he's not going to risk his life to save his until Marlene Dietrich makes her entrance - and what an entrance! How marvelous that what amounts to a bit of Agatha Christie's usual fare becomes such an entertaining and at times right down riveting piece of film-making.

Lost opportunity

If this movie would have been like its first 40 minutes, now we'd been talking about a masterpiece. Unfortunately, after the initial fireworks due to the perfect duet between an extraordinary actor as Laurence Olivier and the magnificent Marilyn Monroe, the movie loses its push, maybe because the story doesn't know where to go. Actually the movie is good only when there's Olivier and Marilyn together in a room: the rest is really pointless. It's a pity because the scenography, the music, the acting and the direction of Olivier were good. A lost opportunity.

about "Scampolo"

That was the second movie from Romy Schneider after the third "Sissi" movie. It played in a beautiful area in Italy with a romantic mood. Romy had a "youth virgin" role as the girl(called)Scampolo. Scampolo is a girl who don't know how to speak/react when a man is interested in her or in love with her. So she asks her older girlfriend who tells her bad and typical stereotypes about men. That makes she cautiously and distrustfully and so it takes a time until she began to show feelings to her lover Roberto Costa. For today movies it had too much kitsch but I think something like that is absent in today's films. This movie is the first I've seen from Romy Schneider(except Sissi) and I love her because she was very beautiful and she is a legend in Germany and for me!

A little Scapallomine a little hypnosis

I guess we all have to start somewhere and this is the film that launched Michael Landon. If he hadn't been picked up for Bonanza I Was A Teenage Werewolf might have been the summit of his career.

Actually Landon gives a good performance as a misunderstood youth with issue who apparently has never adjusted to his mother's passing or so we are led to believe. Sadly enough it's wasted in a film that can only be described as sheer claptrap and not even in keeping with Hollywood werewolf tradition.

Landon's behavioral problems cause him to be sent to Dr. Whit Bissell who's supposed to be a behavioral psychologist. Actually he hides it well because he's been looking for a perfect subject for some experiments into regressing man into the primitive. According to him man must regress and then evolution must start again with of course Bissell guiding it in the proper direction. A little scapallomine, a little hypnosis and some secret drug and Landon's a teenage werewolf. Proving that it doesn't take the bite of another werewolf to do the job.

Bissell can't quite hide the embarrassment and he must have cursed his agent for signing him for this role. The rest of the cast looks equally pained and they all must have envied Landon because at least for half the movie he's got werewolf makeup on.

Review :

Not the same

The movie was an obvious attempt by MGM to capitalize on the huge success of the Andy Hardy series. The studio, suffering like so many others from the zooming popularity of television, was hoping to make more than one of the "new" Andy Hardy movies. Unfortunately, this film got a mediocre reception from both critics and theater-goers alike, and MGM abandoned the idea of continuing the series. In Rooney's own words: "The public just didn't care what happened to Andy Hardy."

The film brought back the four living cast members of the Hardy family(Lewis Stone having passed away in 1953): Rooney, Cecilia Parker, Fay Holden, and Sara Haden. Beyond those four, the cast is brand new. Mickey's movie-wife is somebody named Jane who is unknown to Hardy movie fans. Old standbys such as Ann Rutherford (who refused to appear), Esther Williams, Judy Garland, and Lana Turner are absent, except in flashbacks. Sadly, Lewis Stone, the second most important character in the original series, wasn't even given a flashback; he's only seen briefly in portraits and photos.

The movie itself is a disappointment, at least to me. It simply isn't faithful to the original series. The Hardy house is nothing like it had been in the original movies. The simple, wholesome Carvel that enchanted moviegoers of the late 1930's and early 1940's is gone, replaced by a more modern (for the late 1950's) theme and it's out of place. There are only a few flashbacks; they are too short and are seemingly randomly placed without rhyme or reason. The lighting is much brighter and upbeat than it was in the original series, and the effect destroys the old image. Generic sophistication takes the place of charming simplicity. There's way too much music in the movie; even the flashbacks have music dubbed over them. There are several scenes involving teens of that era doing such things as rock-and-rolling. Apparently, MGM wanted to appeal to both fans of the old movies and the modern audience (such as teens). If box office receipts and critical reviews are any indication, the middle- of-the-road approach managed to please neither group. This movie is about as similar to the original Hardy movies as the late Maury Chaykin's portrayal of Nero Wolfe is to his playing of Jim in "War Games". The recreation by Andy and his son of a "man to man talk", an attempt to match the same by Andy and Judge Stone, falls flat on its face.

Separately, there's the ridiculous ending of the whole town changing theirminds due to Andy's speech, Andy being offered---and accepting after a few minutes of thought---his late father's position as judge, and the new family portrait (a parody of the old one), along with the "To Be Continued" subtitle.

Of note, this movie was the screen debut for the sons of two famous stars: Teddy Rooney (Mickey's son), and Johnny Weissmuller Jr. It's also the first appearance by Gina Gillespie, whose older sister Darlene was one of the original Mousketeers. None of the three had much of a career in acting, and their careers certainly didn't get a springboard from this movie.

I'm a big fan of the Hardy series, and when TCM had their recent Hardy marathon, I recorded and watched them all, including this one, but "Andy Hardy Comes Home" is in a different world than the other Hardy movies.

This interesting story deals about OBAMA a freedom fighter facing colonialism and set against the backdrop of apartheid .It's a serious colonial story about rebellion in an African country very compelling made and deserving a fine treatment with poignant moments . The story focuses on the segregation's opposition by Obam as well as the events leading up a rebellion by the organization of the Mark of Hawk. Obam renounce for living resignedly with discrimination and apartheid confronting the system for gaining independence. It's utterly convincing and does powerful and moving statement about the colonialism and apartheid. This exciting and startling drama maintains a strong grip throughout, however is urgent a digital remastering but the copy-film is worn-out. The best scenes are referred about a flashbacks in China where a Christian missionary, well played by John McIntire, is prisoned by the Mao's communists and his Chinese son . Superb casting with fine all around acting. Good ensemble actors, both Sidney Poitier as freedom fighter to get racial equality and Eartha Kitt turn in wonderfully performances, furthermore include song titled 'This man is mine'sung by Kitt, the future cat-woman in Batman TV series . John McIntire is splendid as doomed preacher and awesome Juano Hernandez in an understated, restrained performance. This feature with hopeful message of potential racial harmony is well realized by Michael Audley in his first and only one.

This thought-provoking, well-meaning expose that, like many others, focuses on African and white people conflicts , such as those also starred by Sidney Potier : 'Something of value'(1957)by Richard Brooks ,again with Juano Hernandez and set in Kenia with terrible revolutionary group named 'Mau Mau' , a 'Mark of Hawk'-alike, and 'Cry the beloved country¨(version 1951)by Zoltan Korda again with Sidney Poitier and set in South Africa where the oppression, horror and destruction of apartheid system are equally exposed.

Allegory on postwar Germany

Its comical nature notwithstanding, this movie is of historical interest in its implicit portrayal of the West German society: The men are either crooks or completely inept or imprisoned, so the women have to take over the men's jobs. But once the men return from detention the women have no choice but to resume their traditional role as house wife. Furthermore, you have the mobsters who hope to get away with their committed crimes and dream about spending the rest of their lifes with gardening (Gardening of course being one of the things Himmler wanted the Germans to do in the 'Lebensraum im Osten').

Cornel Coins the Rhymes, Rennie Starts the Rebellion

Omar Khayyam, medieval poet and scholar and quite the scientist as it turns out in this film, stars Cornel Wilde in the title role. Khayyam is a guy content to do his scholarly thing, but there's a whole lot of treachery going in Persia and it's coming from people close to him.

The legend of Omar Khayyam has him involved with two others, a rich merchant Hisreini who becomes leader of the assassin cult and Nizam who is prime minister to the Shah, played respectively by Michael Rennie and Sebastian Cabot. Rennie who is as always cultured and refined, is the 12th century Osama Bin-Laden of the piece. His is probably the best performance of the film.

By the way Omar Khayyam gives one an opportunity to see both the men who Cecil B. DeMille considered for the role of Joshua in The Ten Commandments in the same film. John Derek who is the crown prince played Joshua and Wilde was the one originally offered the part.

The film was done at Paramount which was a bit unusual itself because the Arabian knights type films were an in house staple of Universal Studios.

Probably Cornel got the part after Tyrone Power who was freelancing then turned it down. It was that way all Wilde's life, getting sloppy seconds from either Power or Errol Flynn.

The film is all right, but should have had Wilde doing a bit more swordplay. He was in real life a champion at fencing.

Great Johnny Carroll songs

Four Johnny Carroll songs, excellent dancing from the kids and Kay Wheeler.

Worth watching the DVD's commentary track where Kay Wheeler describes the times in those heady rock 'n roll days, Elvis and how underground bopping was. I enjoyed all the music (well the ragtime band was a bit strange)...

I wish the other movie Ms. Wheeler was in, Hot Rod Gang, was available on DVD nowadays. Perhaps someone will piece together some of the best bits from such movies in a 'rockabilly pioneers on film' compilation DVD.
