Take 90 Minutes for Yourself, Instead of This

June Allyson, Jeff Chandler, Mary Astor, Sandra Dee, Peter Graves and Charles Coburn star in this forgettable film. In fact, the only thing memorable about it, is that it is basically pretty awful save for some good performances by June Allyson, Jeff Chandler, and especially Mary Astor.

Peter Graves is Mary's son and June's newlywed husband who went off to war and died. It is shown in flashbacks just how it all happened. Mary wants Jeff Chandler to recommend the Medal of Honor for her son and his sacrifice for his country. But Jeff, who served with him, has some issues in doing so.

Just what makes this film so bad is the writing. Apparently this was based on previous material, but the dialogue was terrible, even from the very beginning. It's terrible to see all involved reduced to such embarrassing material. But, even given what she had to work with, Mary Astor still managed to come out looking better than her costars. That shows how great an actress she is.

What tops them all is Sandra Dee as a girl trying to act grownup and throwing herself at Jeff Chandler. I still can't get over her character in this movie. The whole thing was an embarrassment for all considered. I give it a '3', I guess, because producer Ross Hunter knows how to cast a movie. The actors must have needed the money badly.

But if you come across this movie and are curious about it, please walk on by! It ain't worth the 90 minutes of your life.

against Franco we used to live better

Obviously, the sarcastic statement made by Vazquez Montalban twenty years ago is by no means true, but when comparing recent Spanish film productions to some of the oppositional masterpieces shot during the 50's and 60's one feels tempted to believe it.

El Pisito is a caustic criticism on the hardness of lower classes everyday reality in the fifties francoist society. It rawly portrays the infrahuman conditions in which people were forced to live (whole families inhabiting a single room of a crowded apartment) and the perverse struggle getting by in such conditions was, but, instead of imitating the Italian neorealist melodramatic mood to search the compassion and solidarity of the spectator, the material is presented from satirical perspective based on the Spanish theatrical style of "esperpento" (plays that mocks national traditions through the employment of emphasized grotesque features). This way, the choral protagonist of the film (there's a predominance of long cuts framing groups of people, sometimes carrying out simultaneous actions)is shown closer to an animal than a human being in a chaotic urban jungle where everything is permitted, causing distancing in the audience.

For this task, all the actors are just great, creating great doses of black humour; but, avobe all, Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez proves to be one of the best actors in Spanish cinema, brilliantly performing that henpecked boyfriend always conducted by someone else's will like a poor puppet.

In sum, this movie is a must see for anyone interested in Spanish cinema and culture (mandatory for fans of Alex de la Iglesia's oubvre) and lovers of intelligent and bitting humour.

Great British Gangster

I was impressed with this one, a young hoodlum mugs someone (we never actually see the mugging) and is caught knife in hand by a local off duty policeman who drags the young lad home and gives him a lecture about a lad just like him that he knew some years earlier the film is then told as one big flashback to a time just after the war when small time organised crime was ripe (a slew of British gangster films were made on the subject look up The spiv cycle) due to rationing and post war poverty a time when a some parts of england were reduced to rubble and slums were allowed to fester poverty bread desperation and violence and a few petty criminals were able to up their own living standards slightly but considering the mob live on the same street as the kid in question their little empires were nothing more than a joke. one such mobster has fallen head over heals with a decent working class girl who does no wrong and looks after a family that consists of elderly, disabled, alchaolics and her beloved little brother who has developed an obsession with small time gang boss Herbert Lom seeing Lom get everything he wants watching him throw money around and wearing expensive suits makes quite an impression on the young lad and before long hes packing heat and involved in petty crime and giving money to his sister and mother wearing expensive clothes and generally impersonating Lom. His sister hates it and although she wants the good life lom can offer her (as do the family) she at first resists his advances (in my opinion to show the brother money cant buy everything) but eventually she gives in and this seals her little brothers fate. Fantastic film fine acting lom as usual fine as a mobster (although he doesn't actually do much because he wants out of the rackets for a normal life while the young lad very much wants to replace him) mesmerising start to finish great use of location and makes for an interesting look at the squalor of post war england. i don't want to give the ending away but its right up there with all of the best gangster film endings absaloutley brilliant and still after all these years packs one hell of a punch.

if you get the chance to see this don't pass on it.

The Law

I really enjoyed watching The Law. The storyline was great, and I loved the occasional tidbits that were so unexpectedly hilarious. The theme about who was really considered "the law" and the person with all the power was extremely entertaining. Gina Lollabrigida (Marietta) was fantastic! I loved her character's attitude. She knew what she wanted, and she knew how to get what she wanted. The many different plots and characters were all very enjoyable and interesting. And in the end, it is very clear who the person is that has all the power in the city.

I absolutely loved the movie and was highly entertained! I'm so glad that it's finally being distributed for a wide release in the US! There's love, sex, power, drama, and death! with the occasional hilarity and musical number. What more could you ask for in a movie?

The Law

I really enjoyed watching The Law. The storyline was great, and I loved the occasional tidbits that were so unexpectedly hilarious. Adventures of a 19th Century Italian boy in search of mamma.

"From the Apennines to the Andes" was based on a story of Edmondo De Amicis included in his sentimental children's book "Cuore" (Heart) that was widely read in Italy and used to teach lessons on moral rectitude, filial love, social and patriotic responsibility.

This film follows the general outline of the story, while making some changes along the way. The hero of the film is 11 year old Marco Valesini (age 13 in De Amicis' story.) He leaves his home in Genoa to try to reach Argentina where his mother has been living for a time as a servant to make money to send home to the family. Marco reaches Argentina as a stowaway on a ship. Having arrived in Buenos Aires, he enlists the help of several people to direct or transport him to a remote mountain location where his mother now resides.

On board the boat that plies the Paraná River, he befriends the captain and, like a true Genoese, makes a nice pesto for him and the boat-hands using what he has learned from his mamma to prepare the famed pasta sauce of his city.

Eventually he finds mamma, who at first doesn't recognize him, but he remains with her during the time she is ill, and they share a couple of happy encounters before beginning their return voyage home to Italy, together again, to rejoin papa.

The movie was directed by Folco Quilici, whose real fame in the Italian cinema rests with his innumerable exotic documentaries such as "The Last Paradise" and his boy-befriends-shark movie "Tiko and the Shark." He has used much of this movie as an excuse to show us the scenery of Argentina, from the gauchos on the pampas to the peoples of the Andes, all in Cinepanoramic-Technicolor. The picturesque qualities of the narrative sometimes obscure the picaresque adventures of our hero. You can hardly blame him since the elements of the story are rather slim to begin with. Marco Paoletti plays Marco Valesini and isn't required to act very much except to look cute-little-boyish and happy, plaintive, or tearful as required. He was seen in a few other Italian films, played a true picaresque role in the Spanish film "Lazarillo" and performed in Aldo Fabrizi's "Il maestro" along with another Italian boy actor his age, Edoardo Nevola.

Like the story of De Amicis, the film was really made with the young person in mind and must have done well at matinée audiences for Italian youngsters, and perhaps Spanish-speaking ones since this Italian-Argentine co-production was shown primarily in those two versions. It was never released in America. A 1943 version directed by Flavio Calzavara had starred Cesarino Barbetti as young Marco. There was also a 1916 silent version and a 1990 TV mini-series based on the ever-popular story. There is also a Japanese animated version from 2000 called "Marco."

Enjoyable medical caper from the Carry On team

I am quite fond of the Carry On movies, and Carry on Nurse while not the best is no exception. It is too short, the story is rather slight and plays second-fiddle to the gags and while most of them are funny and work very well the film does overdose a tad on the food, bedpan and needle gags. The film does look good enough, I can understand why people would say it's dated, but the photography is crisp and the setting is quite nice too. Carry on Nurse is efficiently directed by Gerald Thomas, the script is snappy and the gags are funny. The performances also add a lot, Hattie Jacques is superb while Joan Hickson, Joan Sims, Shirley Eaton, Leslie Phillips, Kenneth Williams and especially Wilfred Hyde-White are a lot of fun to watch. All in all, an enjoyable film and worth seeing for the cast. 7/10 Bethany Cox

One of the best war films

A lot of times I read here by IMBD, that there are only three war-films on the eastern front (Cross of Iron, Stalingrad and Enemy at gates). There are a lot of other european films with this topic and for me this one is the best of all. There are war films better than this, but no one at the eastern front.

Van Johnson plays against type

This slightly off-kilter Columbia programmer stars Van Johnson as a Nazi double agent who first wins the confidence of the American POWs he's housed with and is then sent on a secret mission to infiltrate U.S. forces during late 1944's Ardennes offensive (more commonly known as The Battle of the Bulge). Johnson does his best as a bad guy, though the film makes an unreasonable stretch to make him sympathetic towards the end, and Dick York is quite good as an army sergeant thrust into a command position by the iniquitous actions of the German infiltrators. As always with a Sam Katzman production, the film tries to mask its low budget with plenty of stock footage, but it also benefits from location footage in The Netherlands. It's no classic, but is a pleasant enough diversion that also features Kerwin Mathews in a rare performance as a really, really bad guy.

Decent Mexican

Man and the Monster, The (1958)

Mexican film about a concert pianist who sells his soul to Satan in exchange for him to become a great musician. The only downside is that he also turns into a hairy, murderous monster. I was somewhat letdown by this film but overall it was a pretty good movie but it takes way too long for the story to get started and the monster isn't used nearly enough. The screenplay does allow time for the relationship between the man and his mother to grow and this here is actually the best thing about the movie. I'm not sure if this film was meant to be a version of Jekyll and Hyde because it does share some of the same ideas even though the monster appears to be more of a werewolf with a rat's face. The monster make up is cheap but effective. Original title: Hombre y el monstruo, El.

HEROD THE GREAT (Viktor Tourjansky and Arnaldo Genoino, 1959) *1/2

No sooner did I state in my review of THE PRODIGAL (1955) above that it was going to be my only tribute to the late Edmund Purdom, that a visit to the local DVD rental shop also provided me with the opportunity to watch this Italian biblical flick. Unfortunately, the end results were even less satisfactory than that earlier Hollywood epic! For one thing, Purdom makes for a decidedly wooden ruler of Judea who, at the film's start, is seen returning from a lost battle against Octavius Caesar(!) to find all of his elderly subjects (who, naturally, had stayed home) seemingly out for his blood! Even his son and mother-in-law openly hate and scorn him! Eventually, Herod regains his composure with the appearance of his wife – and how could it have been otherwise when she is portrayed by the red-headed, curvaceous beauty Sylvia Lopez? Tragically, in real life she would be dead of leukemia before the year was out but not before making Steve Reeves' head spin in her most significant role in HERCULES UNCHAINED (1959)! Out of the blue, then, the film's second half takes the form of a retread of Shakespeare's "Othello" with Purdom the jilted monarch, Lopez the compromised queen, Alberto Lupo as Herod's innocent right-hand man and Corrado Pani (as young Herod Antipas) as his Iago-ish brand new confidant! The strain is too much for Herod-Purdom to bear and, a little while after ordering the proverbial slaughtering of Judea's first born, he just keels over and dies at the foot of his throne! Ugh…which is a pity since a few months ago I had rather enjoyed Purdom's next collaboration with director Tourjansky, THE COSSACKS (1960) – which also shares at least three other distinguished participants (actor Massimo Girotti, screenwriter Damiano Damiani and cinematographer Massimo Dallamano) with this one.

How to live a perfect life in a corrupted world?

Octavio Paz, Mexican poet, writer, and diplomat, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990, said about "Nazarin": "Nazarin follows the great tradition of mad Spaniards originated by Cervantes. His madness consists in taking seriously great ideas and trying to live accordingly". A humble and spiritual priest (Francisco Rabal in a wonderful performance) attempts to live by the principles of Christianity but is cast out of his church for helping a local prostitute by giving her a shelter after she had committed a murder. Nazarin wanders the country roads of the turn of the 20th-century Mexico, offering help to poor and begging for food. His two followers, a murderous prostitute Andara and her sister Beatriz who is a failed suicide desperately searching for love, consider him saint but it does not prevent him from hatred and humiliation from both the church and the people he meets on the road. He ends up beaten in prison and begins to question his faith for not be able to forgive his attacker.

Bunuel tells the story in a manner of a Christian parable masterfully and uniquely combining admiration and irony for the main character and strong criticism of formal religion and hypocrisy. The film is simple and profound as well as beautiful, ironic, and heartbreaking.

I consider Bunuel one of the best filmmakers ever. I've seen twenty of his films and they all belong to the different periods of his life but they have in common his magic touch, the masterful combination of gritty realism and surrealism, his curiosity, his inquisitive mind, his sense of humor, and his dark and shining fantasies. With great pleasure I am adding little seen and almost unknown but amazingly candid and touching surrealistic tragic-comedy "Nazarin" to the list of my favorite films.
